Looking after a built set

Care and display

Built sets are sturdy on a shelf and fragile in a hand. A few habits keep them looking new for years.

Dusting

  • Use a soft, dry brush (a clean make-up brush or a wide paintbrush) and work from the top down.
  • A hand blower, like the ones sold for camera lenses, clears dust from gaps without touching anything.
  • Avoid feather dusters, which snag on small parts, and damp cloths or sprays near stickers and printed parts.
  • A case keeps most dust off. For a set that has gathered years of it, our Repair and refresh service cleans and re-seats it properly.

Sunlight and yellowing

Direct sun is the main enemy of a built set. Over months, UV light yellows white, light grey and blue bricks and fades strong colours, and the change is uneven where parts overlap.

Keep sets out of direct sun. In South Africa north-facing rooms and windowsills get the most of it. Our acrylic keeps dust off but is not sold as a UV filter, so a case is not a substitute for shade.

Heavily yellowed white bricks cannot always be restored, which is why prevention matters.

Heat and humidity

  • The bricks themselves do not mind humidity, but sticker adhesive, paper instructions and the box do. Coastal humidity can lift sticker edges over time.
  • Avoid bathrooms, the wall above a kettle or stove, and spots next to heaters and fireplaces.
  • Never leave a set in a parked car. It gets hot enough to soften and warp parts.

Cleaning an acrylic case

  • Lift the cover straight up with two hands and set it down on a soft cloth.
  • Wipe with a damp microfibre cloth, with a drop of mild dish soap for fingerprints. Never wipe it dry: dust scratches acrylic.
  • Do not use window cleaner, ammonia, alcohol or solvents. They cloud and crack acrylic.
  • Our cases come with a microfibre cloth and a care note in the box.

Glued and unglued sets

Lift any built set by its base or its heaviest part, never by a wing, tower, stem or ear. On an unglued set, a part that comes loose can simply be pressed back into place.

On a spot-glued set the glued joins do not flex, so do not twist them. If something breaks at a glued join, please do not reach for superglue, which fogs and marks plastic. Email us and we will tell you what can be done.

Frames, ledges and walls

  • Hang frames and ledges on fixings that suit the wall: plugs and screws for brick and plaster, proper drywall anchors for boards.
  • Our floating ledges are rated to 5 kg per metre when fixed into masonry, and the helmet bracket to 2 kg with the supplied plugs and screws.
  • Choose a wall out of direct sun, and check the fixings once in a while, especially on a wall that gets bumped.

Moving house

  • Keep the cut-foam box your set came in. It is the safest way to move it.
  • Take off anything that lifts off by design (roofs, keeps, canopies, display plaques) and bag minifigures and loose accessories.
  • Carry sets upright in the car rather than in the removal truck.
  • If something comes apart, rebuild it from the instructions that came in the parcel, or book Repair and refresh.

Light kits and picture lights

  • Our lights run from USB. Use a standard phone charger plug and keep cables where they cannot be pulled by children or pets.
  • Do not pinch a cable under a case cover or a frame edge.
  • Charge the picture light's battery with a USB-C charger in the open, not under fabric or on a soft furnishing.
  • Switch lights off when you are away for long periods.
